Storage Tiering is not new, but it is previously reserved for high-end systems, such as those in datacenters and
server farms. It improves system performance and storage efficiency. TierAge brings this technology to the PC.
Storage Tiering uses multiple storage devices, or "tiers", to distribute files. The act of distributing files on more
than one device naturally improves performance, but Storage Tiering offers much more.
By using tiers with different characteristics, the benefits of Storage Tiering are more dramatic. For example, one
tier may be fast, small, and relatively expensive, while another tier is slow and inexpensive with a lot of capacity.
Those two classes of storage are suited for different types of files. By directing files to their appropriate tier, the
performance and efficiency of the computer's storage are greatly improved.
Storage Tiering can come in many forms, from passive software that reconfigures the computer and lets the
operating system do the work, to highly interactive and "intelligent" software that steers, or even moves, files to
their appropriate class of storage tier.
