Computer performance is all about bottenecks. If two or more components must work together, and one is slower
than the other(s), then it creates a bottleneck. Just to browse the Internet, most of the PC's major components
must work together, including the microprocessor, memory, video, Internet connection, and the storage device
(HDD). Any one of these, if slow, can bring down the computer's overall performance.
Personal Computers are fast, and every year they get faster. The same is true for most components inside the PC,
and the Internet connections that keep them online. However, advancements in PC storage have focused on cost
and capacity, rather than speed and performance.
Consumer-level SATA Hard Disk Drives (HDD) are designed to maximize storage capacity and minimize cost. The
speed of the SATA HDD has improved only slightly, while microprocessors and memories have improved wildly
during the same period.
The SATA HDD has become the bottleneck for the entire PC. This is true for old and new computers alike. It is
also true for both 32-bit systems as well as higher-end 64-bit and multi-core systems. It results in a constantly
illuminated disk-access light on the PC front-panel.
As a PC gets used, it tends to get slower. This is true even for “simple” tasks, like browsing the Internet.
Eventually, it can become too slow to use. Many people then look for ways to recoup the lost performance through
a variety of software products.
The PC industry is crowded with products that improve PC performance, but they are only maintenance tools that
attempt to “clean up” the system. These products do help, at least temporarily, but they do nothing to change the
underlying problem.
TierOne addresses the underlying problem, by offloading the SATA HDD, through selective use of the SSD.
