Overview
The Solid State Drive, also known as Solid State Disk, is abbreviated as "SSD". SSD is not new, but consumer
products, like digital cameras, have brought memory prices down low enough to make SSD more affordable, and
more mainstream.
SATA SSD plug into your PC through standard connectors and cables, similar to HDD. However, SSD have no
moving parts, so they are quicker and faster than HDD. SSD uses memory chips similar to those used in digital
cameras, and they use multiple of these memory chips in parallel to increase capacity and performance. Still, SSD
storage capacity is small compared to HDD.
Current SSD Use (or Misuse)
Many people realize that SSD offers a solution to the PC storage problem. They replace their SATA HDD with a
SATA SSD, in an effort to maximize performance. There are two main reasons this is not an optimal approach.
First, SSD are small and expensive in comparison to HDD, so a HDD is still required for larger storage needs, and
the user is stuck managing the distribution of files between the two types of drives. Second, SSD wear out much
faster than HDD. When the SSD is used as the primary PC storage, its life expectancy is reduced. This also
means the system will have to be reinstalled on a fresh SSD when it fails. TierOne offers a better option.
SSD Endurance
SSD wears out more quickly than HDD. To counteract this, SSD are designed with wear-leveling built in, which
spreads the use over all its internal memory, and extends the life of the device.
Comparing Performance
A SATA HDD is capable of 20-50MBps of bandwidth, while its access speeds are measured in milliseconds. A
SATA SSD is capable of 100-300MBps of bandwidth, while its access speeds are measured in tens of
microseconds. Clearly, the SSD outperforms the HDD, by far, in both bandwidth and access-speed comparisons.
Bandwidth is needed for large files, such as video, while access speed is important for touching smaller files that
are spread out across the storage. Windows needs a combination of good bandwidth and fast access speed to
deliver smooth system performance.
